What a DSG Service Involves

A DSG is not a conventional automatic. There is no torque converter and no single sump of fluid quietly doing its job for the life of the car. A DSG uses two clutches and a hydraulic mechatronic unit that controls every shift, and both depend on clean fluid at the right pressure.

Fluid breaks down. Clutch material and swarf end up in suspension. Pressure drops, shift quality suffers, and the mechatronic unit starts working harder than it was designed to. Left long enough, a service item becomes a repair bill.

Full drain and refill with VAG-approved fluid to the correct specification for your gearbox
New filter and sump gasket
Fluid level set on dealer diagnostics within the specified temperature window
Gearbox fault code scan and live data check before and after
Clutch adaptation values read and reset where required
Mechatronic seal and surrounding area inspected for leaks

The fluid level on a DSG has to be set within a narrow temperature range with the engine running. Get it wrong and the box either starves or aerates. This is the step cheaper garages skip, and it is the reason we do it on ODIS.

Which DSG or S-Tronic Do You Have?

Volkswagen Group has fitted several different dual-clutch gearboxes and they are not serviced the same way. Knowing which one you have tells you what it needs and how often.

DQ200, 7-speed dry clutch

Golf, Polo, Audi A1 and A3, SEAT Leon and Ibiza, Skoda Octavia and Fabia. Smaller petrol engines up to around 250Nm. The clutches run dry, but the mechatronic unit has its own hydraulic fluid.

DQ250, 6-speed wet clutch

Golf GTI, Passat, Tiguan, Audi A3, SEAT Leon Cupra, Skoda Superb. The long-serving wet clutch box, fitted widely from the mid 2000s.

DQ381, 7-speed wet clutch

Replaced the DQ250 on MQB platform cars from around 2017. Golf, Tiguan, Passat, Skoda Kodiaq, SEAT Ateca.

DQ500, 7-speed wet clutch, high torque

Transporter T6, Golf R, Audi RS3 and TT RS. Rated to around 600Nm and the strongest of the transverse boxes.

DL501 and DL382 S-Tronic, 7-speed longitudinal

Audi A4, A5, A6 and Q5. Fitted to longitudinal engine layouts and serviced differently again.

Wet clutch boxes need fluid and filter every 40,000 miles or four years, whichever comes first. If you are past that, you are running on degraded fluid. Dry clutch DQ200 units are handled differently, so send us your registration and we will confirm exactly what yours needs.

Mechatronic Failure: We Fit New Units Only

The mechatronic unit is the hydraulic and electronic control module that operates the clutches and selects gears. When it fails you get flashing PRNDS, loss of drive, limp mode, or a gearbox that will not engage at all.

There is a large market in refurbished and repaired mechatronic units. We have used them in the past. We stopped.

A refurbished unit is a used unit with the known failure points addressed and everything else left as it is. You are fitting a component with an unknown remaining life, charging the customer for the labour to do it, and hoping. When one comes back, that labour gets paid for twice. That is not a saving.

We fit new units only. Every one is coded and adapted to your vehicle on dealer diagnostics, with basic settings, clutch adaptation and gear learning completed before the car leaves.

What It Costs

DSG service, £280

Fluid, filter, sump gasket, diagnostic level set, full gearbox fault scan and adaptation reset. Completed the same day.

Diagnostics, £100 per hour

Most gearbox faults are identified inside the first hour. The diagnostic charge is separate and is not credited against any repair that follows. You are paying for the time and the equipment it takes to find the fault properly, which is the part that stops you buying components you did not need.

Mechatronic replacement and clutch work

Quoted after diagnosis. The cost depends on which gearbox you have and whether the mechatronic unit or the clutch pack is at fault. We will not put a figure on it before we know which.

What Happens When You Book

1. You tell us the symptoms

Registration, mileage and what the car is actually doing. Most DSG faults have a recognisable pattern and the description narrows it down before you arrive.

2. We confirm the gearbox and the work

We identify the exact box from your VIN ahead of the booking, so the correct fluid and parts are on the shelf on the day.

3. Same day for a service

Drop the car off in the morning and collect it the same day.

4. Diagnostics come with a written answer

Fault codes, live data and what they actually mean in plain terms, along with what it will cost to put right.

5. Nothing happens without your say-so

No work beyond what was agreed goes ahead without a phone call first.

Your Manufacturer Warranty Is Not Affected

Having your DSG serviced by an independent specialist does not invalidate your manufacturer warranty. Under Block Exemption Regulation you are entitled to have your vehicle serviced anywhere, provided the work follows the manufacturer schedule and uses parts of matching quality. We do both, and we record the service properly, including digital service history where applicable.

Our own work carries the same warranty terms as the manufacturer offers on parts and labour.

DSG Servicing: Common Questions

How often does a DSG gearbox need servicing?

Wet clutch boxes including the DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 and DL501 need a fluid and filter change every 40,000 miles or four years, whichever comes first. Dry clutch DQ200 units are treated differently. If you are unsure which you have, send us your registration and we will confirm it.

How much is a DSG service?

£280, including fluid, filter, sump gasket, diagnostic level setting and a full gearbox fault scan.

How long does a DSG service take?

Same day. Drop the car off in the morning and collect it that afternoon.

What are the signs my DSG needs attention?

Juddering or hesitation when pulling away, delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse, jerky low speed shifts, whining or grinding noises, flashing PRNDS on the dash, or the car dropping into limp mode.

Will servicing my DSG at an independent garage affect my warranty?

No. Block Exemption Regulation entitles you to use an independent garage without losing your manufacturer warranty, as long as the work follows the manufacturer schedule and uses parts of matching quality. We do both and record the service properly.

Do you repair or refurbish mechatronic units?

No. We fit new units only. Refurbished units carry an unknown remaining life and we are not prepared to charge a customer twice for the same labour when one fails. Every new unit is coded and adapted to your vehicle before the car leaves.

What does gearbox diagnostics cost?

£100 per hour. Most faults are identified within the first hour. The diagnostic charge is separate from any repair cost and is not credited against it.

Do you work on Audi S-Tronic as well as VW DSG?

Yes. S-Tronic is Audi branding for the same dual-clutch technology. We service and repair DL501 and DL382 S-Tronic boxes alongside the transverse DSG units fitted to VW, SEAT and Skoda.

Can you still stamp my digital service history?

Yes. We record services to the manufacturer digital service system where applicable, so your service history stays intact.
